Part Three
Reedy stood on the corner, questioning the hysterical woman as EMTs tended her wounds. An EMT placed an ice pack to her face and told her to hold it there. She pressed it tight against her cheek, then sagged, resting her head in her free hand.
“They came out of nowhere,” she said, pointing towards the alley. Her face knotted with grief.
“I was standing there, and they jumped me from behind. The young one—the boy—I had him, until a woman tackled me to the ground.”
“What did they take?” he asked, writing in his notepad.
“They took my phone, and the ring my husband gave me.” Her voice cracked as she broke down again. “He’s dead. We renewed our vows after his diagnosis—he surprised me with it on our wedding day.”
“‘And the ring– how much was it worth?’ Reedy asked, frowning.
“Fifty grand,” she said.
Part Four
Alpha Male landed on the concrete beside Officer Reedy. The woman’s eyes went wide and her tears dried up.
“What's going on here?” Alpha asked.
“Gang activity,” Reedy said. “It’s been getting worse.”
“They attacked me!” she said, bursting into tears.
“Rose mentioned it to me this morning. How have I missed it?” Alpha asked.
“They’re good,” Reedy said. “Feels like they’re keeping it small on purpose so we can’t nail them. Damn smart if you ask me. Criminals will adapt, you know?”
“Well,“Well, I didn’t,” Alpha said, looking toward the alleyway. “What’s back there?” I didn’t,” Alpha said, looking toward the alleyway. “What’s back there?”
“Nothing but a manhole,” Reedy said.
Alpha’s jaw tightened as he fixed his gaze on the dark mouth of the alley.
